FREESAT
What is Freesat?
Freesat is a new service, providing free high-quality satellite TV to the UK. Its launching in Spring 2008, and is a joint venture between the BBC and ITV. For a one-off payment you will receive a digital receiver, satellite dish and installation. There will be no subscription charges and no contract. Freesat is not like Freeview which comes via your rooftop aerial. Freesat will offer more than 80 TV channels. Viewers will have a large range of radio and interactive services to choose from too. Channels will be arranged into genres such as movies, music, sport, lifestyle, children's, shopping, news and more. High Definition programmes are subscription free. HD transmissions will be free on Freesat, and will be available at least a year before the earliest possible implementation date on terrestrial. That is because there is severely limited spectrum available on terrestrial, and Ofcom want to sell the valuable bandwidth released by the analogue channels (as they are turned off across the country as part of Digital Switchover) instead of reallocating it for HD channels. The BBC Trust has now given the go-ahead for the trial BBC HD satellite channel to be formally adopted on a permanent basis. Here you can already find live sport, national events, natural history, drama, documentaries and more - if you have the correct equipment. This channel will be incorporated into the Freesat package and promoted as the jewel in its crown. ITV will launch its own high definition channel in the Spring of 2008, broadcasting many of its primetime ITV1 shows - and just in time for the launch of Freesat! The other UK-centric HD channel currently available is Channel 4 HD - which actually launched in December 2007. This channel is unfortunately tied up in an encryption contract (along with most of the other Channel 4 group of channels.) It will only become eligible to join the Freesat platform if and when Channel 4 ends its encryption deal with BSkyB during 2008. This does appear to be very likely though, and would clear the way for a number of other C4 standard definition channels to join the Freesat party too. If you have an HD-ready television, or are thinking of buying one, Freesat is a fantastic opportunity to get the most from it. Many HD programmes will be broadcast with Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound too.
